Summer Reading

In an effort to inspire lifelong learners through reading,
HFCS expects students to participate in various reading activities over the summer.
Summer reading expectations and associated projects are divided by grade level as detailed below or click on the applicable grade.
 
Kindergarten - All students are encouraged to participate in a summer program
(e.g., Barnes & Noble, local library program, etc.).
 
 
 
 
 
5th Grade - Read the following:
 
Nory Ryan's Song by Patricia Reilly Giff
Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
 
Write a one page summary of each book, neatly written or typed, that details the main characters and setting, as well as, what was most liked and/or disliked about the book.  Summaries are due the first day of class.
 
6th Grade - Read the following:
 
Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen
Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers
The Islander by Cynthia Rylant
 
Students must be prepared to discuss these books on the first day of class.
